Dreams Puerto Vallarta, leader in conservation effort of rare marine sea turtles, prepares for new nesting season...
PHILADELPHIA, May 2007 – Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa in Mexico, a luxury resort located on the coast of the Pacific on one of the largest bays in the world, has been quietly leading the conservation effort of preserving the Olive Ridley marine sea turtle for over fourteen years. Providing guests with a glimpse into one of the great mysteries of the life of a sea turtle, Dreams Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are home to this rare species during their reproductive season, from June to September each year, solely for the purpose of nesting.
This program was initiated and developed in 1993 for two primary reasons: to preserve this species of turtle, which is in danger of extinction, and to educate the community about the significance of the hotel’s preservation endeavor. An on site children’s program, called the Explorer’s Club, houses the sea turtle conservation program. In reaching out to the community, Dreams Puerto Vallarta has chosen to partner with a local non-profit institution, Pasitos de Luz (Step Lights), which supports severely disabled children whose families have limited economic resources.
The resort gives every guest the opportunity to learn about the curious plight of this sea turtle and to adopt their very own turtle or brood of turtles through voluntary donations. In partnering with Pasitos de Luz, half of the donations made through adoption are given directly to this non-profit center for children. The remaining fifty percent is invested in improving the turtle nursery program on property. These dollars also ensure the continued education of the resorts on site Marine Specialist. Dreams Puerto Vallarta’s vision doesn’t stop there. The resort hopes to garner enough donations and resources to build its own permanent Conservation Center and to further support environmental programs taught in the local public schools.
The Olive Ridley female sea turtle returns to the beach of their birth to dig their nests and lay their eggs at night. Once these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, as they have for hundreds of thousands of years, the incubation period is approximately 45 days. With the aid of resort employees and volunteers, these nests are then collected and preserved in the resort’s Conservation Center, minimizing the possibility that the eggs will be damaged or destroyed. When they hatch, the tiny hatchlings are returned to the sand at night, where they instinctively go towards the ocean, following the horizon and the moon. The program is so well respected in the area, that other municipalities bring the nests from surrounding beaches to Dreams Puerto Vallarta. To date this past season, over 33,000 eggs have been lodged and approximately 30,000 turtles have been released. During these special occurrences, the children of Pasitos de Luz are invited to watch the release of the turtles.
With the nesting season about to approach, Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa is the ideal location to witness one of the most fascinating phenomena of nature. A luxury resort catering to couples, families and friends, the resort is bordered by the magnificent green mountains of the Sierra Madre mountain range. All rooms and suites have a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and their picturesque private beach.
